The Cavs don’t really have any rookies, so we couldn’t sweep the awards, but 2 out of 3 ain’t bad.
Coach Mike won Coach of the Month for January by guiding the Cavs to their best monthly win percentage (.786) since 1996. Looking into the month I projected a 9-5 record, so beating that by 2 games while losing Andy and Sasha (and Lebron for what should’ve been a win) is impressive. We also won 6 of 8 road games, getting our road record to nearly .500, at 12-13.
Early on in the year I said winning 2 out of 3 at home and half on the road would pave the path to the playoffs well. We’re just about hitting those marks now, closing in on 3 seed Orlando, and staring at another 50 win season. With the injuries, holdouts, and the team that played against Seattle, Mike Brown definitely deserves some credit.
You know who else deserves credit?
MVP and player of the month, Lebron James, who put up some weak ass numbers during January.
You heard me! Can’t compare Lebron to anybody but himself. After a November in which he was better across the board, how can I be happy with cruise control Lebron?
He shot worse from the field, from 3, and from the line. He had more steals+blocks in November. He also had fewer fouls and turnovers. With 2 fewer assists per game in January, but only .7 more points, only his improved rebounding number is cause for celebration.
I’m just kidding. 33, 9 and 6 is sick. His shooting was “down” (.004) to 49.2%. He took double digit free throws in 9 of 13 games and had 9 in 2 others. He didn’t manage any triple doubles, but set a career high in rebounds and exploded for 51.
Yeah, Lebron is good. If I’m Joe Any-other-team, I’m scared to death that this wasn’t even his best.
Go Cavs!
